This week some of our students began their standardized testing, with the rest of the students beginning next week. This time of testing reminds me of the tests that God sometimes gives us in our lives. When I face trials and testing, it can seem like the test will go on forever, and I just want to reach the end. I wish that God would take the pain and difficulties away and give me a life full of joy or happiness. However, the scriptures teach that difficulties help us grow and become more Christlike. Just like the standardized tests our students are taking will help show their strengths, the trials that God gives us show how strong our faith is.
I am reminded of James 1:2-4 which says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” This verse reminds us that God gives us trials for a reason. These trials are not something that we should dread or fear, but we should look forward to them with joy. We can have joy in the fact that God is trying to help us become steadfast, or firm in our faith.
Another reason why we can have joy during testing is given in verse 5 of the same passage “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” This verse shows that God will give us wisdom to deal with our trials. I am so thankful for this verse! So many times in my life, I have needed wisdom, and I am so grateful that God is right there ready to give it to me. It is so encouraging and refreshing to know that I am not going through my tests alone because God is with me.
So whether you are facing a difficult trial right now, or just need God’s wisdom for your everyday life, or you are stressed about standardized tests, remember that He promises to give His wisdom to anyone who asks for it and that He will be with you through it all.
