Psalm 100:1-5 says
1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;[a]
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
5 For the Lord is good;
his steaDfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Throughout my life I’ve noticed a pattern - a recurring message that won’t be deterred: make a joyful noise. When I was little, my mom told me a story of her mom being on the phone and my mom whistling. The caller asked my grandma why she didn’t tell her child to stop making such a racket, and my grandma simply stated that it was joyful noise, not a racket.
Throughout my time as a child, a student, and now as a teacher, I find myself coming back to that concept - joyful noise. God asks us to bring Him our joy, not perfection, not the right notes, not the best that has ever been, but our joy. One thing I try to encourage of each student is that we are not expected to make perfect noises (especially when we’re learning), but that God just wants our presence, our intention, and our songs.
We use musical worship not just to make music/sound, but to honor and glorify our God, our Saviour, our Healer, our Everything, and celebrate in community. Through every high and low, every concern, every uncertainty, our God is here and He is waiting for us - every moment of every day.
