“If he had split the sea for us, and not taken us through it on dry land. . .”

“It would have been enough.”

If he had taken us through it on dry land, and not drowned our enemies in it. . .”

“It would have been enough.”

These are a few of the early verses of the traditional Jewish song, known as the Dayenu, which is sung during Passover. The Hebrew word, Dayenu, translates to, “it would have been enough.”  The song has fifteen verses, each ending with, “it would have been enough.”

My family has been watching the show, “The Chosen” which follows Jesus and his disciples.  In Season 5, Episode 4, the disciples are taking turns saying a line from the Dayenu, as Jesus listens to them during their celebration of the Passover.  They recount the many events in which God shows his omnipotence and sovereignty in their nation’s history, ending with the sending of the Messiah. . .aka, Jesus.

As we have just passed the season of gratitude, we can send up prayers of gratefulness for everything that He has done for us. And even after all our prayers of thanksgiving, we can enter into the Christmas season, knowing that the gift of Christ the Messiah. . . “would have been enough.” It is and still will be.

May you encounter God this season with the same perspective that the Israelites believed so long ago, that our Savior is all that we need, and everything else is just added grace and mercy from our Lord.
