VeteransDay

Standing on yellow footprints. That’s how every Marine starts out in the United States military. It’s a moment of anticipation, nerves, and perhaps even second thoughts! When I stood on those stenciled symbols in 1996, our country was at peace; war was something I never had to face. In the years before and since, others have chosen to sign the dotted line in every branch of service when the stakes were much higher: life, death, and freedom. Wives, husbands, parents, and children have held their breath and prayed for a safe return. All so that the rest of us can enjoy our liberties in peace and safety. That’s what we commemorate every November 11th on Veterans Day.

Monday will also be the Marines’ 250th birthday. The Army and Navy have marked 250 years in the past few months as well. In other words, for two and a half centuries, brave men and women have put themselves in harm’s way for their fellow Americans. My Dad served in Vietnam, both my grandfathers fought in WWII, my wife’s brother joined the Marines at 17 ½. I’m sure you have a list of such courageous people in your life, too - perhaps you’re on that list.

On Veterans Day, let us thank God for the people who have carried the weight of our freedom on their backs through the mud, the sand, and the seas. Let us bring comfort to those who bear the scars of sacrifice, just as we are comforted by the One who laid down His life for His friends (John 15:13). Let us pray for the ones left behind to hold the family and the nation together.

To all of you who have served and to the families that stand by them, thank you.

And Happy Birthday, Marines!
